Half-Life 2 Mod Resources News and Communities. - Valve creates some of the best and most enduring games ever made. Steam has become an A+ digital distribution center and no true gamer should be without an account. What I enjoy more than just a great gaming experience is a game that can go for years on end because of the huge gaming community that supports it and like many of Valve’s games Half-Life 2 fits the bill perfectly.

Having creative everyday people and even some professional types taking a game and bending, stretching, altering and… modding! it into something slighty different or even making an almost completly new game is just seemingly magical. I mean talk about getting the $ best bang for your buck $, this is what its all about.

With this post I’m simply going to highlight some of the best / most popular Half-Life 2 mods out there and include some other resource sites that do a fantastic job of listing most if not all mods available. If you’re looking to expand the Half-Life 2 experience, then read on:

Featured Half-Life 2 Mods:

• Dystopia - A cyberpunk-themed total conversion that pits mercenaries against Corporate security forces in the physical world and cyberspace.
• Empires - A first-person shooter/real-time strategy hybrid where each team lead by a commander, viewing the world in the top-down perspective leading troops in the first-person perspective. It features a variety of player classes and vehicles.
• Gary’s Mod - A “sandbox” mod that allows the player to manipulate objects using the Source physics engine. Allows both single and multi-player interaction.
• Goldeneye Source - A total conversion for Half-Life 2 that aims to recreate the original Nintendo 64 classic GoldenEye 007.
• Insurgency - The goal of this mod is to resemble today’s real-life squad based infantry combat. It is based on the Iraqi insurgency.
• Iron Grip: The Oppression - A first-person shooter/real-time strategy hybrid set within the fictional Iron Grip universe in a predominantly urban setting. The game pits two separate factions against each other: the Rahmos and the Resistance.
• Pirates, Vikings and Knights II - A mostly melee based mod featuring three factions; Pirates, Vikings and Knights. Map objectives varies between deathmatch, capture the flag-ish and more. Currently six playable characters in beta 2.
• Zombie Panic! Source - A team-based zombie themed mod. Zombie Panic! Source pits player-controlled survivors against player-controlled zombies, in a gameplay style that simulates an outbreak. The zombie team starts with only a few players, but their ranks grow as survivors are mauled and switch to the zombie team.
• MINERVA - Episodic single-player mod based in the Half-Life 2 universe, with a style of storytelling inspired by classic games such as Marathon and System Shock.
• Fortress Forever - Fortress Forever expands on the classic team fortress action as well as introducing elements to improve accessibility for players new to the genre. If you ever find yourself antsy waiting to get back into the action in other multiplayer games, then this is the game for you. It’s not all instant gratification though; within the game there are classes to suit every player’s style, be it stealth, finesse with movement, precision aim, the joy of weilding a ridiculous amount of explosives, or simply brute force . Even within these classes (9 in total) you can go about developing your own playstyle.
• Eternal Silence - Play the latest version of Eternal Silence, the multiplayer space mod for the Source Engine. Fight in large, cinematic battles split up into specific phases in the third version of this high flying mod. Bomb enemy corvettes, escort a boarding party and hack your way into enemy subsystems.
